Group study on Iraq
The Group of study on Iraq ( Iraq Study Group ), also called the Baker-Hamilton commission, or more simply the Baker commission is a composite commission of ten people designated by the Congrès of the United States, which is charged to provide an independent appreciation on the situation in Iraq and the war in Iraq carried out by the United States.
This commission had been proposed by Frank Wolf, representative republican of the Virginia following a meeting with the Capitole on the initiative of a group of the members of the two parties of the Congress of the United States. The panel does not have direct authority to change the policy followed into Iraq, but it has emmis political recommendations. The Group of study on Iraq is assisted by the American Institut for the peace which diffused its final report on their Web site the December 6th 2006.
Members
The commission Co-is directed by James Baker, a former Secretary of State (Republican) and Lee Hamilton (Democratic), a former American representative and vice president with the Commission of 11-September. It is composed by four republican S and four democratic S.
Republicans
In addition to Baker, the panel of the republicans is the following:
- Sandra Day O'Connor, old judge of the Supreme court
- Lawrence Eagleburger, old Secretary of State
- Edwin Meese III, former minister for the justice of the United States; It was replaced by Meese.
Old a Directing of the CIA, Robert Mr. Gates was also member of the panel until it was replaced by Lawrence Eagleburger on November 10th, 2006. Spoil resigned because it was named by the president George W. Bush as a Secrétaire with Defense the November 8th 2006, substitute Donald Rumsfeld.
