Group Harrowing

The Groupe Harrowing was an press group founded by Robert Harrowing (N. 1920 - m. 1996), called the “papivore” because of its insatiable appetite for the purchase of newspapers and periodicals. After one animated period, part of the group still remains under the name of Groupe Harrowing Media.

The turnover of the companies which of it result is today of approximately 2,8 billion euros.

The Harrowing group was often décrié for its hegemonic attitude, but if he does not hesitate to concentrate his average techniques, its leading line passes by the respect of the personality of the titles which he controls and their anchoring in the local reality of the ground.

The group

The group consisted of two entities. Socpress (Le Figaro, the Express train…), from now on controlled by Dassault Communication, and the France-Antilles, and become Group Harrowing Media.

the Socpresse, controlled since 2006 to 100% by the group Dassault. It had entered there while buying 30% to the family Harrowing. He was owner:

of the “Le Figaro”, “Barber Magazine”, “Barber Madam”, “the Indicator Bertrand”, “Properties of France”;
of the weekly supplements “TV Magazine” (7 million specimens) and “Fémina”;
of about fifteen regional newspapers of which “Midi Libre”, “the Public property”, “Dispatches”;
of a dozen weekly magazines of proximity, of which the group Press the Alps the Jura (" Savoie" , “Savoyard Rise”, “the Messenger of Thonon”, “the Gessien Country”, “the republican Platform of Bellegarde”, “Mail of Saint-Claude” and “the Independent one of the High-Jura”) of the group Flemish Press…;
of 40% of the group Rossel, editor of the Belgian newspapers “the Evening” and “the Meuse”;
of 67,6% of the Voice of North;
of printing works Roissy Print, and of the control publiciatire Publiprint.

the group the France-Antilles (family Harrowing), directed today by Philippe Harrowing and famous in 2006 Group Harrowing Media, is owner:

of a myriad of local dailies of the French islands and Normandy;
of the Comareg, French n°1 of the free press (bought since);
of 27% of the Is Republican;
and since 2001, of an press group in formation in French-speaking Switzerland.

Discusses

In 1985, a division operation, in two legal entities distinct from the Harrowing group (Socpresse and the France-Antilles), is carried out in order to circumvent the law on the concentration of the press (law Fillioud-Mauroy). Actually, it was about a false division for better reigning in the world of the written communication, whereas this group controlled already 38% of the French national press and a fifth of the regional press.
