Grootfontein

Grootfontein (large fountain in Afrikaans) is a town of Namibia located in the North-East of the country (area of Otjozondjupa) on the road which leads Windhoek to the Bande of Caprivi.

In 1885, 40 family Boer S based a colony, baptized republic of Upingtonia, on the site of Grootfontein. They had left the South Africa and were to be established in Angola. But the coveted territories had been annexed to the Portuguese colony of Angola.

Towards 1895, the Germans took the control of the area and established a military base at the entry of the band of Caprivi.

Today, the small town of Grootfontein preserved its Germanic architecture (old German fortress of 1896) and its streets are bordered of Jacaranda S.

24 km of the downtown area have, in Hoba, the visitors can admire one of largest the Météorite S ever found, 80.000 years old, 3 m length for a weight of 50 tons and a volume of 9 m, composed of Fer to 82%, Nickel at 16% and Cobalt to 1%.
