Gregoire XIII

Ugo Boncompagni , born with Bologna on January 1st 1502, died in Rome the April 10th 1585. It succeeds the Pape Pie V the May 14th 1572 under the name of Gregoire XIII (in Latin Gregorius XIII , in Italian Gregorio XIII ).

After studies of canonical Right and civil to the University of Bologna, it enters to the Roman Curie in 1539. Paul III gives him the stations of Abréviateur of the apostolic Chancellerie and of chief clerk of the Supreme court of the apostolic Signature. In 1545, it takes part as lawyer in the Concile of Thirty. In 1558, it is named bishop, and must be before ordered priest. In 1566, it is named secretary of the pontifical briefs. Lastly, in 1572, it is elected pope with died of Pie V. Its Conclave is exceptionally short: it lasts only one day.

Its principal work is the institution of the Gregorian Calendrier by the bubble Inter gravissimas , in 1582, fixing the first day of the year at January 1st.

It is also characterized by its many foundations from Séminaire S, which it thinks of being an effective weapon against the Réforme. It thus founds the German College, the Greek College, the College Maronite or the College of the neophytes (reserved with the Juif S and Musulman S converted). It sent a mission of the Jesuits in the Ottoman Empire in 1583 who founded the Lycée Saint-Beno4it cheese, institution headlight of catholic teaching with Raising. It gives a building to the Roman Collège ( Collegium romanum ), held by the Jésuite S.

It created the university of Pont-à-Mousson by the bubble In supereminenti of December 5th, 1572.
