Green Chemistry

It is the American chemist Paul Anastas who gives birth to the green Chimie by presenting the twelve principles founders:

1. It is to better produce less waste than to invest in the cleansing or the waste disposal.

2. The syntheses must be conceived with an aim of maximizing the incorporation of materials used during the process in the finished product.

3. When it is possible, the methods of synthesis must be conceived to use and create substances slightly or not toxic for the human ones and without consequences on the environment.

4. The chemicals must be conceived so as to fulfill their primary function while minimizing their toxicity.

5. When it is possible, it is necessary to remove the use of auxiliary substances (solvents, agents of separation…) or to use inoffensive substances.

6. The energy needs of the chemical processes have effects on the economy and the environment of which it account and which is necessary to hold should be minimized. It is necessary to develop methods of synthesis under the conditions of temperature and environmental pressure.

7. When technology and financial means allow it, the raw materials used must be renewable rather than not-renewable.

8. When it is possible, any useless deviation of the diagram of synthesis (use of blocking agents, protection/déprotection, temporary modification of the physical/chemical process) must be reduced or eliminated.

9. The catalytic reagents are more effective than the stoechiometric reagents. It is necessary to support the use of the catalytic reagents most selective possible.

10. The chemicals must be conceived in order to be able to dissociate in nonharmful breakdown products at the end of their utilization period, that with an aim of avoiding their persistence in the environment.

11. Analytical methodologies must be elaborate in order to allow a monitoring and a control in real-time and in the course of production before there is appearance of dangerous substances.

12. The substances and the form of the substances used in a chemical process should be selected in order to minimize the chemical accident risks, including the rejections, the explosions and the fires.
