Greccio is an Italian commune of the Province of Rieti in the Latium.
Located on the slopes of the Lacerone mount in the the Apennines, Greccio overhangs the river of Velino and is distant of 16 km approximately of Rieti, the city nearest.

History

The city initially makes think by its aspect of the Greece or Grezze of the 11th century, when there was a castle. The castle now disappeared except a simple tower, which is now the bell-tower of the church of S. Michele.

Greccio is known like the place where, in December 1223, Saint François designed the first alive crib of the nativity; the tradition continues in these places, this day, and a memorial with Saint Francois, the sanctuary St Francois, can be visited.

The current city of Greccio is depopulated and the administrative offices of the commune are decentralized.
