Great national party

The Grand national party (GPN, or GNP according to the English acronym) is a South Korean conservative party , main force political of opposition in South Korea. The great national party is directed by Kang Jae-seop since 2006.Au international level, it is member of the international democratic Union.

At the head with the legislative elections of 2000, it obtains 133 seats and 39% of the voices, managing to put in minority, in 2004, the president Roh Moo-hyun with the support of elected officials of the Democratic party of the millenium (majority).

The political crisis which resulted from it led to anticipated legislative elections. Those resulted in a short defeat of the GPN (121 seats). However, the reverses of the parliamentary majority and presidential, at the time of the bys-election organized since 2004, reinforced the GPN.

The local elections of May 31st, 2006 showed clear advanced Great national, critical party with respect to the policy of the president Roh Moo-hyun with regard to Pyongyang, too considered reconciling by the GPN, before the party does not join, in July 2007, with the principle of a development of the intercoréens exchanges. (see the article detailed on the Relations inter-Corées). But the political scandals and the social inequalities remain the independent factor of unpopularity of the president Roh Moo-hyun.

The failure of the GPN to the partial legislative elections of April 25th, 2007 weakened its position of favorite for the presidential election of December 2007.

At the time of the internal primary education for the presidential election, Park Geun-hye, former president of the party is beaten by Lee Myung-bak by 48,1  % of the voices against 49,6  %.
