Great Southern
The area of the Great Southern (the Great South ) is one of the nine areas of the Western Australia.
It is limited to the west by the area of South West, to north by that of Wheatbelt, in the east by that of Goldfields-Hope and in the south by the Antarctic Ocean.
It has a surface of 39.007 km ² and a population of approximately 54.000 people. Its administrative center is the port city of Albany
The area has a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and fresh and wet winters.
The economy is dominated by the cattle breeding and the cereal cultures. the area is one of the principal producers of Laine and meat of sheep of the country. The production of wine is in full expansion in the area of MT Barker. The town of Albany is an important center of fishing.
The Noongar S, a local population aboriginal were the only inhabitants of the area during several tens of thousands of year. The first Europeans to be settled in the area were a group of soldiers ordered by Major Edmund Lockyer who settled in Albany the Christmas Day 1826.
The area includes/understands the zones of local government of Albany, Broomehill, Cranbrook, Denmark, Gnowangerup, Jerramungup, Katanning, Kent, Kojonup, Plantagenet, Tambellup and Woodanilling.
