Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln was an attraction conceived by Walt Disney and its team of WED Enterprises for the house of the state of Illinois to the International exhibition of New York 1964-1965. She was then moved with Disneyland and opened the July 18th 1965 the shortly after the 10th birthday of the park.

Attraction was closed in 1973 to be replaced by The Walt Disney Story which closed however since 1975 to allow the return of Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln but under the name The Walt Disney Story featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln because part of the exposure on Walt Disney was always presented.

Attraction is again closed in 2005 to temporarily leave the place to another exposure, in 50 years honor of Disneyland within the ceremony Happiest Homecoming one Earth. Attraction must reopen after the end of this ceremony envisaged in September.

History

Walt Disney and Abraham Lincoln

Walt Disney was fascinated by Abraham Lincoln since her more tender youth. He often recited celebrates it Discours of Gettysburg in front of his class at the elementary school or outwards.

With the success of Disneyland, Walt considered in 1958 an extension of Main Street the USA, named Liberty Street. This street more or less parallel in Main Street had not evoked the time at the end of the 19th century but the colonial time. Principal attraction was to be a presentation of all the US presidents. Walt wanted that these personalities are animated but the technology of the time did not allow it. Robert Moses meets Abraham Lincoln

A little later Robert Moses craftsman of the restoration of New York between 1930 and 1950 approaches Walt. He asks him to take part in the International exhibition of New York 1964-1965 by providing attractions worthy of the Disneyland park to the many houses of the states and companies present. Walt, thinking that the robot required several years of development and would not be ready in time, had to justify its troops for try to present Lincoln to the fair. During this time Moses proposed in the State of Illinois to present this attraction in their still incomplete house.

The robot functioned well with the studio but posed many problems in New York. Walt wanted to even cancel the presentation with the press for technical reasons. But once solved problems, " Mr. Lincoln" introduced and discoursed in front of daily crowd visitors. This prototype was the human first audio-animatronic.

The new house of Lincoln

With the end of the fair and the success of this presentation, Walt Disney decides to continue to introduce Mr. Lincoln to the public. The Opera House, a theater of 500 places, located at the entry of Disneyland in Main Street the USA is requisitioned to accommodate it. Attraction opens the July 18th 1965.

January 1st 1973, the Disney company decides to pay homage to Walt Disney and to use the space of the Opera House of Street Hand. Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln thus is closed and replaced by The Walt Disney Story, a retrospective on Walt.
Closing causes a sharp protest because Lincoln is an integral part of the work of Walt. Moreover the local population was at the time mainly republican and Lincoln was the first US president resulting from this party. The services of Disney accepted many mails and calls of dissatisfaction. The direction decided to present commemorative film and the audio-animatronic. New combined attraction opened the June 12th 1975 under the name The Walt Disney Story Featuring Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln and lasted nearly 40 min.

Reinvented Lincoln

At the beginning of the Years 1980, the imagineers seek to improve technology of the audio-animatronics, Lincoln included/understood. The center of biomedical study of the Université of Utah is contacted to work on a greater resemblance of the artificial limbs. The audio-animatronics are gradually replaced by versions with the movement more réaliste.
In 1984, attraction is thus updated, the robot of replaced Lincoln but the remainder undergoes also some modifications:

the music of the background music, Battle Hymn off the Republic , is replaced by Golden Dream borrowed from attraction The American Adventure of EPCOT

An attraction with the erratic destiny

During approximately 15 years attraction remained appreciably the same one. At the end of the Years 1980, rumors of replacement by Jim Henson' S MuppetVision 3D however had launched raised shields ED the share of local associations. The attraction of the muppets opened in 2001 in the joint park of Disney' S California Adventure with Juste a little more than 200 Mr.

With the International exhibition

The version of the attraction presented to the international exhibition of New York between 1964 and 1965 insisted on the origins of the political career of Lincoln in Illinois (as from 1837). The state was the partner of attraction. The anthem of Illinois was sung at the beginning then the music composed by Buddy Baker, type-setter at Disney, took the continuation.

Like the following versions of attraction, the spectacle begin with a film on the life from Lincoln, its jeunsse, its beginning in policy and its presidency. Then l" notch soulevaitpour to leave the place to Lincoln sat on an armchair. The robot rose and started its speech.

At the end of the speech, the anthem The Battle Hymn off the Republic was sung by an invisible choral society while a sunset with the background was transformed into a made spangled banner of clouds and stars.

Disneyland

Walt Disney offered to " Mr. Lincoln" a house permamnente within Opera House on Hand Street U.S.A in Disneyland. Attraction opened the July 18th 1965 is the shortly after the 10th birthday of the park. The state of Illinois, partner during the fair of New York did not wish to continue and was replaced by the GULF Oil Company.

Attraction was one of rare with a ticket Complimentary and thus free until 1984 year of the disappearance of the system of the coupons with Disneyland. The reason of this exemption from payment was that Walt Disney regarded as important that young people can see the spectacle devoted to Lincoln.

A voyage in Gettysburg

Within the story, Cunningham meets all manner off historical figures, starting with Civil War photographer Matthew Brady. Both Brady and Cunningham journey to Washington, D.C to meet President Lincoln, who is conversing with abolitionist Douglas Frederick. Lincoln then receives year invitation to speak At the Gettysburg ceremony from his secretary, John Hay.

After summons parting words from Lincoln, Cunningham races off to the battlefield, where He is wounded by Confederate gun fire. Ace He recovers in the hospital, Lincoln comes to visit, telling the pirivate that He must live. Large The final is the Lincoln appears reciting the Gettysburg Address.

This new version off the show contains No elements from the three previous versions, other than the return off the chorus off " The Battle Hymn off the Republic" At the final. The film shown before Lincoln' S appearance is also different, using real photographs instead off drawings and paintings, giving the presentation the quality off has Ken Burns documentary. Final The set for the was changed to reflect the place where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, although the pillars from the previous shows are still there.

The current Lincoln appears was designed to make Lincoln seem " more real". In all other versions off the show, Lincoln was presented in has stoic and legendary light. He stood up straight and tall and spoke to the crowd without any notes in his hand. In 1984, the figure was given notes to read while He spoke. This new version gives has off more period-accurate vision Lincoln, who wears spectacles and delivers his speech with the help off notes.

Did you know?

the original voice of Lincoln was recorded by the American actor Royal Dano. The resemblance was confirmed by recordings on cylinder of the time and also one of last the survivor of the American Civil War having met president Lincoln. Walt thought that Lincoln was a very tired man and also a stressed man, this is why Walt " demanda" to have a natural tired tone.
the recurring narrator of Disney, Paul Frees was also that of attraction to the Fair of New York and the original version with Disneyland like unquestionable supporting characters of film. It is Corey Burton, with the very close voice, which replaces it in the last version.
According to the woman of Walt, Lillian Disney, and his daughters Diane and Sharon with each time it was going to see the spectacle, it cried at the end. He often claimed to have something in the eye.
