Great Eastern Erg
The Grand Eastern Erg is a desert area of the North-East of the the Sahara ranging between the Tunisia and the Algérie.
It extends on a Superficie from 190.000 km ² and represents a Quadrilatère of 500 kilometers out of 300. It is composed with the two-thirds of Dune S of Sable of which highest can reach 250 meters height. It is separated from the Grand Western Erg, 2 times smaller, by vast a plate stony.
Its limits are:
- in the east, mounts of Dahar (Tunisia) and the Hamada El Homr (Libya)
- in the south, the hamada of Tinrhert (Algeria)
- in the west, the plate of Tademaït (Algeria)
- in north, the Chott el-Jérid (Tunisia)
The Great Eastern Erg is strewn with Oasis within its septentrional limits. In Tunisia, the largest oases are Douz, Tozeur and Nefta, in Algeria El-Wadi and Touggourt. Traversed a long time by Caravan S, its main activity is the Tourisme Saharan, more particularly active in Tunisia. Ksar Ghilane is the southernmost oasis.
