Great Convention
The Grande Convention is one of the fundamental texts governing in the universe of fiction of Dune of Frank Herbert the constitutional political reports/ratios of the tripod of the capacity Empereur/Landsraad/space Guilde, between the Maisons, the Emperor and the space Guilde (the Bene Gesserit having officially only one role of council).
It organizes the relations between Maisons, and these last and the Throne of the Gold Lion, property of the Maison Corrino until the seizure of power by Paul Atréides. It proscribes in particular the use of atomic by a House against another, requirement made necessary following carnages and massive destruction that these weapons caused at the time of civil wars between Maisons. Great Convention, by framing the wars between the Houses of Landsraad, also tends to avoid the collateral damage to protect the population not civil fighting.
It contains moreover two major prohibitions: prohibition to manufacture thinking machines, and the prohibition of the use of bacteriological weapons. These two taboos result from the Jihad Butlérien with the war of the Men counter the machines, and the robot-like Plague employed by Omnius.
Paul Atréides was shown by the Emperor Padishah Shaddam IV to have violated the Grande Convention into 10193, at the time of its offensive on Arrakeen, where were stationed the troops Sardaukars of the Emperor and the quotas of the Grandes Houses, come on Arrakis to cut down Muad' Dib so that it Épice can run with floods (according to the devoted formula of the space Guild). Muad' Dib was denied this charge while alleging that it had used atomic Maison Atréides only to destroy the Wall of the Shield, assembly line of Arrakis, in order to go to the meeting of the Emperor who had convened it. It justified that by the necessary celerity which a honest subject was to express when its Emperor convened it. This diversion of the Grande Convention is one of the key of the victory of Muad' Dib and its Fremen, which led to the galactic supremacy of the Maison Atréides.
