Graz

Graz (Slovenien: Gradec) is, with more than 250.000 inhabitants (more than 320.000 for the agglomeration), the second plus big city of Austria, capital of the province of Styrie ( German Steiermark in ). The city is located at the south-east of the country and is crossed by the Mur. It is an important university town since it counts more than 35.000 students, and the library of its university is the largest scientific library of Styrie and the third of Austria. In 1540, Eggenberg founded the Paradies , or school Lutheran, in which Johannes Kepler taught later.

The archduke Charles II of Austria Intérieure burned 20.000 Protestant books in the square of what is nowadays an asylum of mentally ills and succeeds in giving Styrie under the authority of Rome. Nikola Tesla studied electric engineering at the polytechnic school in 1875. The prize winner of the Nobel Prize Otto Loewi taught of 1909 to 1938. Erwin Schrödinger was briefly the chancellor of the University in 1936. A little later a small concentration camp was installed not far from Graz by the Nazis and he flees.

The name Graz is derived from the Slavic word grad for castle; gradec , marked “gradets”, means “small castle”. Moreover Gradec is always the Slovenien name of Graz. Graz was built around the hill of the Schloßberg. The first mention is in a document of 881 then became the residence of the local authority. The privileges of the old charter was confirmed by Rudolph I in 1281. With a strategic situation at the entry of the fertile valley of the Wall, Graz was often besieged without success: by the Hungarian under Matthias Corvinus in 1481, and by the Othoman Turks in 1529 and 1532.

In 1970, it accommodates the fourth festival Europa Cantat.
