The gray substance constitutes the part of fabrics of the central Nervous system concentrating the cellular bodies of the Neuron S and the cells gliales. Observed in a histological cut , it appears darker than the remainder of fabric because it contains the cores cells. This part of nervous fabric constitutes the heart of the data processing nervous, while the white Substance is consisted of nervous fibers (Axone S mainly) ensuring the transmission of the nervous messages between the neurons.

One finds gray substance mainly on the level of the cerebral Cortex, cérébelleux Cortex, in the central gray Noyaux and in the cores of the cerebral Tronc and inside the Spinal-cord.
