Grau

The term “grau” means estuary or channel in Occitan, it comes from the Latin gradus which means passage. It marks a communication between water of the Mer and water interior. A grau opens at the weakest point of the Offshore bar, at the time of a Crue or of a Tempête.

Water of the graus (semi-soft, semi-salted) is generally very full of fish.

This term of “grau” gave its name to various Languedocien localities located on banks as of these channels.
