Grated
Rapa (sometimes named Grated Iti , the “small one” to distinguish it from Rapa Harmed , the Easter Island, the “large one”) is a island located in the archipelago of Southern the in French Polynésie.
The island of Grated has a surface of approximately 40 km ² and is made up of an old volcano, the Perau mount, high of 650 m, of which one of the sides crumbled and of which the ocean filled the crater. 10 rock small islands of Marotiri, with 70 km with the east-south-east of Grated, constitute the southernmost ground points of French Polynesia.
The island is the chief town of the common of Grated. It is the inhabited island more in the south of the Australes and isolated, being distant of 500 km of the nearest inhabited island, Raivavae, and of more than 1 420 km of Tahiti (coordinated exact: 27° 38 ' south, 144° 20 ' west). Ahurei (370 hab), the principal village of the island, is located at the edge of the immersed crater. 497 people lived the island in 2002. The other village names Area (127hab). The island does not have any landing strip and is connected to the other islands by a cargo liner all both or three months.
The island was discovered in 1791 by George Vancouver, it had called it at the time Oparo . Many ancient ruins (“Pa” or “avoids”, kinds of forts) strew the island, particularly on the escarpés peaks and places. Thor Heyerdahl, in particular, made excavations there, seeking bonds between the two Rapa.
