Grass snake of Montpellier
The Grass snake of Montpellier , or Malpolon monspessulanus is a grass snake alive in France in the Mediterranean south, like on all the circumference of the Mediterranean.
It can reach 2,25 meters length Diurne and it is equipped with very a good sight. It is one of the fastest Serpent S of France (especially in the escape!).
It is the only grass snake present in France to have a Venin (little) toxic. But it does not have hooks functioning like those of the Vipère. These hooks, not very mobile, are located at the bottom of the upper jaw and are grooved. They do not function with the manner of a syringe. It cannot thus be dangerous for the man. If it is driven back or feels in danger, it can sometimes be drawn up like a cobra, strongly blow to impress its adversary and, in last spring, rebiffer and bite. Its bite is not painful, contrary to what is sometimes here and there marked…
This grass snake reproduces April at June, the females laying from 4 to 14 eggs under a heap of sheets or stones. Its food consists of muridés but also of small rabbits and, possibly, very small Chat S for the largest grass snakes.
The grass snake of Montpellier belongs to the species in theory protected on the unit from the French metropolitan territory.
