Grass snake at levels

The grass snake at levels ( Elaphe scalaris ) is a Serpent of the family of the Colubridés.

Description

The adults measure in general 120 cm (160 cm to the maximum). They are large slender snakes with the pointed muzzle exceeding the jaw lower and with the short tail. The pupil is round and the back of the scale rostrale (end of the muzzle) is very pointed.

The adults are rather uniform, brown with yellow-grisâtre with two lines sunk along the back. The youthful ones are very marked, yellower, with black spots in the shape of H on the back giving the aspect of a scale, characteristic which is at the origin of the name given to the species.

Habitat

They are diurnal snakes of the zones shone upon, rocky or broussailleuses, able to climb in the bushes. They were nourissent of small mammals and birds.

Distribution

The surface of distribution of the species covers the Iberian peninsula and the Mediterranean edge of France.
