Graphical environment to manage
Graphics Environment Manager or GEM is a software of graphical interface created by DIGITAL Research inventive of the operating system CP/M (whose Q-DOS ancestor of MS-DOS was a denatured clone). It was mainly used on Atari ST where it was integrated into the operating system TOS. It was also related to PC, in particular on the machines manufactured by Amstrad where it was provided out of standard. A lawsuit brought by Apple at DIGITAL Research concerning a patent on the graphic environments (mainly the use of the icon “dustbin”) put an end to the sale of GEM (only on Intel platform… since Atari continued to use it!).
After the repurchase of DIGITAL Research by Caldera, the source code of GEM was distributed under the terms of the license LPG.
