The songs of Christmas (called simply noëls , with tiny) are songs (Christian or profane) traditionally interpreted during the festivals of end of the year.

Tradition

According to the New Testament, the first songs of Christmas were sung by the angels above the crib to celebrate the birth of the Jesus child. Historically, the first songs of Christmas were merry songs evoking the Nativité, sometimes even of the songs rates/rhythms or the Danse S.

The oldest song of known Christmas is the canticle Between the gray ox and ass ; it goes back to the beginning of the 16th century.

In the Anglo-Saxon countries, one sings Christmas carols , in Wallonia of the heyes , Spain of the Villancico S , in Russia of the koliadki to the doors of houses, in Romania of the colinde , Poland of the kolęda , Bulgaria of the koleda , Italy of the canti Natalizi , in Germany of the Weihnachtslieder .

In England, it is of tradition that groups of singers will sing noëls from house in house, where they are rewarded by a little money, some cakes or a suitable drink. The collected money is normally transferred with a charitable organization.

In the countries where it is established, the Salvation Army organizes public collections on the pavements with Christmas, with the sound of whole of coppers ( Brass band S ) playing of the noëls.
