Places and monuments

The commune is known for its museum Jean de Béthencourt which evokes the history of this lord of Grainville-la-Teinturière having undertaken in 1402, for his own account, the conquest of the islands the Canaries.

At that time, the archipelago was known, but did not have a lord. With the agreement and the support of the king of Castille and the Pope, it is made main of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro. It organizes there, in a manner that it wants exemplary, the relationship between Normands and natives so that these islands are “the exaltation and the ostentation of all Christendom”.

This conquest had considerable consequences on the history of humanity, because 90 years after, the Canaries were, in 1492, an essential stopover for Christophe Colomb before his great crossing of the Atlantique towards the New World.

The museum also makes it possible to the visitor to better know the Canaries of today with which Grainville-la-Teinturière maintains the privileged relations. Opening of the museum from April at October, first Sunday of the month, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Information or reservations to the 02 35 57 13 07 or 02 35 57 20 66. Free entry.
