Grahamstown (iRhini in Xhosa, Grahamstad in Afrikaans) is a Ville of South Africa located in the Province of the Cape-Eastern .
Grahamstown is located at 125 km of Port Elizabeth and at 180 km of East London and at an about sixty kilometers of the coast of the Indian Ocean. The black populations gathered on the " place Egazini" , a plate dominating the site of Grahamstown, to launch the attacks against the British camps located in the valley.
Sit of the Université Rhodos (Rhodos University), Grahamstown belongs administratively since 2000 to the municipality of Makana.
The town of Grahamstown counts 62.000 inhabitants.
Grahamstown was founded in 1812 as a military station advanced by the lieutenant-colonel John Graham in order to make safe the border and the Colonie of the Cape against Xhosas.
The British colonists settled in Grahamstown starting from 1820 where they last affonter not only the local populations, but also the Afrikaners, hunger and the dryness.
The city became in a few years the second most important city of the colony of the Cape.
With the municipal elections of March 1st 2006, the ANC remorté 80,9% of the votes of the residents of the municipality of Makana.
Regarded as the city of the " Britannique" colonist; , Grahamstown is a recognized university town (a kind of Oxford South-African).
The University Rhodos (RU), founded in 1904, belonged to oldest and the most recognized of African continent and South Africa. It counts 6000 students coming from the whole world. She was baptized " Rhodes" in honor with Cecil Rhodos.

Each year, not less than 15 popular festivals are organized in Grahamstown of which the " national festival of arts" in July.

The main street and commercial of Grahamstown is " High Street" where the gravers and the supermarkets are located.
The British military camp was transformed into psychiatric hospital and certain buildings are also used as cells of prison.
The " 1820 National Settlers monument" is a national monument dedicated to the colonists from where the visitors have a very beautiful sight on the city.
Albany Museum of Grahamstown is the second oldest museum of Southern Africa. Founded the September 11th 1855, it belongs to the research institute of " Rhodos University". It is composed of more than two million specimens of invertebrates of water shower, terrestrial insects, fresh water fish, of prehistoric tools etc the museum of history also includes/understands a vast collection of objects having belonged or representing the first colonists of the Cape Oriental.
On the other side of the bridge of the Matyana river, natural border between the white city and the Township, the visitors will discover another face of the city through the habits and the culture Xhosa (dances…).
