History
With the Moyen-âge she knew a certain notoriety, of which still testify the Prieuré to Cayac, the vestiges of Castéra and the Motte Saint-Alba. In 1152, when the King d' Angleterre became, by its marriage, Duc of Aquitaine, the Château of Ornon, known as Castéra, located on the Paroisse of Gradignan, was, seems it, the Chef-lieu of the Comtau d' Ornon, vast territory located at the south of the the Garonne. The comtau of Ornon was a territory belonging directly to the king of England-duke of Aquitaine. The Gascon term of " comtau" was often translated by French " county " , but it is about an error: it was acted in fact of a comtal field of the duke of Aquitaine which was also count de Bordeaux and not of a county. The Seigneur S of Ornon had only part of this comtau. The castle of Ornon was devastated in 1409 by the count d' Armagnac, Vassal of King de France. This medieval period coincides with that of the Pèlerinage S of Saint-Jacques-with-Compostelle. The exit of Gradignan, on the main road of Bayonne, the Prieuré of Cayac made it possible thousands of pilgrims to rest before approaching terrible the Landes, " sorry country where tout" is missed;.
One observes since the Moyen-âge a similarity of reactions between Bordeaux and Gradignan vis-a-vis the political great events, in particular the Fronde, the revolutions of 1789, 1830 and 1848: being wary with regard to the Parisian centralizing capacity, the notable ones and business men were worried by their economic interests than by the great political debates. As for more modest people their only concern was to have a work and sufficient means of subsistence. Many bonds linked Gradignan with the capital of Gironde indeed. It was of tradition, for Gradignanais, to sell their milk and their vegetables at the so close city, like maintaining the linen the Bordelais. In the same way, of many traders of Bordeaux had properties Viticole S in Gradignan, thus making live days laborer and wet coopers.
Until worms 1950, Gradignan was a simple village living of the resources of its ground and its Rivière, the Eau Boob. Remained a long time with the drag by a shouting lack of infrastructures, the commune was equipped overall, starting from 1952, under the mandate of Bernard Roumégoux: it became a town of 22.150 inhabitants, while having preserved its green aspect.
