Governorship of Tataouine

The governorship of Tataouine (rear RTL ولايةتطاوين), created the March 2nd 1981, is one of the 24 Gouvernorat S of the Tunisia. It is located in the south-east of the country at the border of the Algérie and the Libya. With a Surface of 38.889 km ², the governorship of Tataouine is the largest governorship of Tunisia. It shelters a population of 144.100 inhabitants. Its Chef-lieu is Tataouine.

Geography

Located at 500 kilometers of the Capital , it is limited by the governorships of Kébili, of Gabès, Médenine in north, by Libya in the east and the Algérie in the west.

The average Température is there of 22°C and the annual Pluviométrie varies between 88 and 157 millimetres.

Administratively, the governorship is cut out into 7 delegations, 5 municipalities, 5 councils rural and 64 Imada S. Remada is largest of the delegations of Tunisia in term of surface.

History

The area of Tataouine knows during its history the succession and the mixing of several civilizations of which in particular punic civilizations , Roman, Berbères and finally arabo-Moslem woman.

The Arab coming from the East settled in the plains close to the well to carry on their agricultural activities and built thereafter the ksour on the mountains to preserve at it the products of their Récolte S. In 1903, one records the regrouping of several tribes which were up to that point simple wandering to constitute the core of the current town of Tataouine (of which the name means in Berbère “source of water”).

Economy

The economy of the area is founded on the Agriculture. Indeed, equipped with an important agricultural surface (200 000 Hectare S), the area is dominated by the olive-trees, leguminous plants, early products and the Asperge which is intended for the Exportation as well as the red production of Viande and of Lait.

The sector Industrie L is in the process of development. The governorship counts 15 industrial companies operating primarily in industries of construction materials and the Agroalimentaire like 3 foreign industrial companies or with mixed capital, in the city November 7th, which extends on 8,5 hectares. A new industrial park of a surface of 20 hectares is programmed.

The governorship includes/understands an important oil-bearing field with El Borma having an annual production of 14 million Baril S. These last years, the area experiences a remarkable development of the Saharan Tourisme and this thanks to the existence of geological sites, of the Saharan ksours, the Berber Village S as of the oases which make the charm and the specificity of the the Tunisian Sahara.

Cinema

George Lucas films several sequences of the trilogy of the Star Wars , in 1977, and of its continuation, at the end of the Années 1990, in the area. It settles for that in Tataouine, in the area of Matmata and in wide salted Chott el-Jérid.
