Governorship of Béja

The governorship of Béja (rear RTL ولايةباجة), created in 1956, is one of the 24 Gouvernorat S of the Tunisia. It is located in the north of the country and covers a Superficie of 3558 km ² (either 2,2% of the surface of the country). It shelters a population of 303.500 inhabitants including 52,2% less than 25 years. Its Chef-lieu is Béja.

Geography

Located at 105 kilometers of the Capital , the governorship of Béja constitutes a zone of geographical connection between the close governorships. It is delimited by the Mediterranean (26 kilometers of littoral in north), the Gouvernorat of Siliana in the south, the Gouvernorat of Jendouba in the west, the Gouvernorat of Ariana in the east and the Gouvernorat of Zaghouan in south-east.

The average temperature is there of 18°C. There exist 2 types of Climat S:

  • a wet climate with a Pluviometry from 600 to 1200 millimetres (in north)
  • a rather dry climate with a pluviometry from 350 to 450 millimetres (in the south)

Administratively, the governorship is cut out into 9 rural delegations, 8 municipalities, 8 councils and 101 Imada S.

Economy

Known by its agricultural richnesses , the governorship of Béja is placed among the first governorships in the agricultural production of the country. These factors make agriculture the first economic activity of the area. 91% of the grounds are thus dedicated to this sector. The levels of production are currently the following:
  • Cereal S: 2.700.000 tons (15% to 25% of the national production)
  • Fruit S: 48.500 tons (3% of the national production)
  • Vegetable S: 103.500 tons (3% of the national production)
  • Milk: 110.000 liters
  • red Meat: 14.700 tons (coming from a Cheptel of 67.300 bovine, including 19.900 heads of pure races, and 313.000 ovine and caprine)

Dimensioned Industry L, because of its agricultural richnesses, it is the industry Agroalimentaire which dominates the sector. One account 24 oil mills, 2 transformation units of Tomate S, the Sucre laughs at Béja, a unit of yeast, a Semoule laughs Minoterie, a factory of fizzy drinks and a dairy power station. The area on the whole counts 54 production facilities including 20 foreign companies, 14 exporting units completely and 16 companies with foreign participation. It exists there 5 industrial parks of 72 hectares. A new zone of 22 hectares, located at Northern Béja, will be created soon.

The mining activity is under development also with the recent discovery of 3 sites:

  • Djebba for the Lead and the Zinc
  • Nefza for the mineries ferrous ore
  • Dhouahria for the Iron
