- May 13rd: Insurrectionary riots in Algiers and creation of the Committee of public Hello, de Gaulle called with the capacity.
- May 19th: Press conference of the de Gaulle general.
- May 28th:
- Resignation of the president of the Pflimlin Council and end of sound government.
- Demonstration antifascist in Paris.
- June 1st: Beginning of the government Charles de Gaulle (3) President of the Council.
- June 2nd: De Gaulle obtains the full powerss of the Parliament for six months, with mission of working out a new Constitution.
- September 4th: De Gaulle presents the news Constitution, Place of the Republic in Paris.
- September 28th: Approval by referendum of the Constitution of October 4th, 1958 known as Constitution of the Fifth Republic, with nearly 80% of yes.
- October 1st: Creation of the Union for the new Republic (UNR).
- October 2nd: Independence of Guinea granted by France.
- October 4th: Promulgation of the Constitution of Ve République, adopted by Referendum the September 28th. IVe République is finished.
- November 23rd: Legislative elections (Nov. 23-30): broad victory of the right-hand side (UNR), strong retreat of the Communists.
- December 9th: Jacques Chaban-Delmas president of the National Assembly.
- December 21st: Charles de Gaulle is elected president of the Republic and of the French Community with 77,5% of the voices, it succeeds Rene Coty on January 8th, 1959, (end in 1969).
- December 28th: Implementation of the Pinay-Rueff Plan of financial cleansing with a devaluation of 17,5% and the creation of the new franc.
1959
- January 6th: Reform Berthoin: prolongation of the compulsory schooling up to 16 years.
- January 7th: A decree increases to 24 months the obligations of activity of the military service.
- January 8th: Charles de Gaulle becomes officially the First president of the Fifth French Republic.
- January 9th: Beginning of the Government Michel Debré until April 14th, 1962.
