Gouhenans

Gouhenans is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Saône and the area Franche-Comté.

Geography

The village of Gouhenans is to 12 km of Lure and to 10 km of Villersexel on the RD 265. Its culminating point is at 381 m on the site of the Mount from where one can see the Chapelle Ronchamp, the the Vosges and buttresses of the the Jura.

History

The first documents on Gouhenans were found with the Abbey of Bitaine and go back to 1186. The castle located on the edge of the cliff which dominates the village, was preceded by a strong house going back to 1472. The oldest parts of the current castle date from the 15th century. Building to date incomplete, one can admire the arched turret, main door and cellars. (this residence is a private property). It is at the beginning of the 19th century that Gouhenans was industrialized with the installation of a factory of extraction of the coal. One still sees one of the four chimneys. Then salt was extracted. Approximately 1000 inhabitants then are counted. A glassmaking was also established in the years 1900.

Personalities related to the commune

One of the children of Gouhenans left a trace in the history: the general CARTEAUX, born in 1751 whom been useful in many armies. He had under his orders some NAPOLEON
