The gothic metal (or goth metal ) is a musical genre being with crossed Doom-Death, heavy metal and Gothic Musique. It developed with the beginning of the year 1990 in Europe and with the the United States.
Confusion between metal and Gothic movement
Because of many confusions, it is important initially to specify that the gothic metal does not form part with propement speaking about the kinds attached to the Gothic Musique about origin. There is indeed a frequent confusion on behalf of the public between the Metal and the Gothic Mouvement. They are however well two distinct movements, where the heavy metal developed its innumerable sub-genera, the Gothic movement also developed its own specific musical genres: the Gothic Rock'n'roll, the Darkwave, the Death rock'n'roll and the Batcave which are styles which are absolutely not related to metal in the beginning.
In fact, confusion between these two movements comes owing to the fact that certain groups of metal (particularly of doom-death) to beginning of the year 90 took as a starting point certain elements of the Gothic music to mix it with their own bases metal, which generated the Gothic metal. But it is a kind which is not officially recognized strictly speaking like Gothic music for the Gothic community, although often appreciated by the Gothics. Thus, the gothic metal should not be regarded as a bound kind, initially, with the Gothic movement, it acts only of one sub-genus of metal being inspired more or less freely by Gothic elements .
General characteristics of the gothic metal
Contrary to an generally accepted idea the goth metal is not necessarily defined by a simple recourse to a female song. Even if it is a frequent feature. All the groups of gothic metal do not have necessarily recourse to the female song. And all the groups of metal having recourse to the female song are not necessarily gothic metal.
The esthetics of the gothic metal either necessarily does not answer a direct filiation with the Gothic Rock or the Darkwave. (see low the paragraph which is devoted to this question). Nevertheless much of the pioneers groups of the gothic metal posted influences more or less marked with the various forms of Gothic music of the years 1980 (Gothic Rock, Darkwave, Deathrock). But at the base most of the groups of Gothic metal come from the scene Doom metal
