Historically, the Gothic rock'n'roll was born with London on ashes from the movement Punk, with groups like Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure and Joy Division, groups contemporary of the punk-rock'n'roll incarnated by the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, Generation X (etc) with the the United Kingdom in 1977 - 1979. While the latter practiced aggressive Rock and extraverti, the goths groups were more introverted and personal. The Gothique rock'n'roll only started to be defined like movement with the appearance of Bauhaus in 1979 then with the movement Batcave, Sisters off Mercy.

the movement diverged from the Punk several manners, particularly by its influences. While the punk one was undoubtedly related on the Dadaisme and the Situationnisme, of the elements of the culture goth can go up with literary movements much older like the Gothic Horreur, the Romantisme, the philosophy existentialist. Their culture draws creative individuals often very interested by a variety of artistic, religious, historical movements. The Gothic Mouvement asserts less statutory values and policies that a " esthétique" , mainly focusing on the personal belief “Gothic” and often on a broader culture. Another thesis would come from Johnny Rotten, interviewed in the documentary rock'n'roll The Filth and the Glory where it allots the look and Gothic esthetics has Sid Vicious in its self-destroying phase junky, heroinomane, very of black vêtu, the hair dishevelled by beer and the filth, the lacerated skin, the pale dye. This thesis would tend to privilege the self-destroying, nihilist, morbid side and héroinomane of the movement. Thesis reinforced by the mythologies built around died of this one and Ian Curtis which will deeply mark the Gothic esthetics of beginning of the year 80, putting at the second plan, of the blow, the deeply ironic and theatrical side, inspired of the Glam Rock English, of groups like Bauhaus, Virgin Prunes, Christian Death or Fad Gadget. It will be noted in addition that this nihilist phase will be forsaken thereafter for the benefit of an esthetics more traditional macabre Hard-Rock.

Key groups

Siouxsie & the Banshees and The Cure regularly maintained fasteners with the culture, the style and esthetics " goth" whereas their music is isolated. Siouxsy & The Banshees continued in this style with the albums The Scream in 1978, Juju in 1981 considered since as the first true Goth disc, and finally live the Nocturne of 1983, true black floret " gothique" with the famous Robert Smith with the guitar. After 1983, their use of the imaginary Gothic is more dubious. The Cure contributes an original share to the kind, concentrated on the albums Seventeen Second , Faith and especially Pornography . By their encroachment in the industrial Music German and its dark universe, Depeche Mode lorgne also towards a Gothic rock'n'roll whose album Black Celebration (1986) constitutes the apogee. But the blackness and the radicality of Joy Division made them a strong and durable reference of the movement. However after the suicide of Ian Curtis, the group becomes New Order, a new group of New wave directed Dancefloor . Bauhaus is also a great reference of the Gothic rock'n'roll, strongly influenced by the British Glam rock'n'roll, like David Bowie and T. Rex. Some of the members of Bauhaus formed Tones one Tail after the bursting of the group, releasing the Gothic music strongly influenced by the album Pet Sounds of the The Beach Boys and Psychedelia. Jane' S Addiction, a modern group of Hard rock uses aspects of the play of guitar of Daniel Ash. Jane' S Addiction appears in tragic film, Gift . In the Années 1990 the British rock'n'roll goth approached a Hard rock standard, to which Synthétiseur S are often added, or effects of guitar which resemble synthés. The strategy of the singers changes, the music is more introspective than the energy delivered by the hard rock:

  • singer

  • player (S) of low guitar
  • player
  • beater
  • player of Synthé

Characteristic musical

The Gothic rock'n'roll is on its more fundamental level one combination of punk rock and New wave.

Between 1979-1985 one knew it as vagueness Post-punk, alternative and news.

Lyricism is generally very poetic with the naturalness, and follows melodies in the instrumentation of the song.

Arrangements of guitar are the most notable influence with the total musical model. The microphones with simple winding are used in priority, Fender Jazzmasters, Jaguars and Mustangs is well adapted. The sound of guitar before the treatment extends from the clear sound to the hot saturage with arrangements of profit roughly to 50%. The combination of the following effects will give you this sound:

  • Chorus

  • analogical Flanger
  • Echo, occasional use of echo with band (Delay Slap) also.
  • Reverberation of low between 0-75%

The low one makes resound a very hot and round sound, and often employs effects of chorus and/or flanger.

The percussions are often played by a beater using an electronic kit, the frequencies are between 80-150 beats per minute.

The synthetizers have usually the same attributes that those of the guitar, and are generally based on a type of “cords” with a rate of attack of 25%.

  • the composition in song uses the progressions of agreements I-IV-V (fundamental, quad, fifth) which characterizes the rock'n'roll & roll, but the agreements is often increased or decreased.

  • the topics in minor tonality are widespread.
  • the composition is usually directed guitar, and follows the vague beachcomber of vertical balances, rather than the horizontal balances of the blues.
  • the focal points are often on the two increments of semi-tonal of the particular balance.
  • Divers fingerings of octave is often substituted for the agreements.
  • the model of play is generally all the downstrokes, to create the “sound”.

This type of Gothic rock'n'roll requires a rather skilful musician, because it will often include the modal balances in the construction of song. Moreover, the finger picking and the arpeggiation high/low of the agreements are used enough.

The total construction of the songs is similar to the Hard rock

  • 1. intro

  • 2. verse
  • 3. chorus
  • 4. solos
  • 5. chorus
  • 6. verse
  • 7. chorus
  • 8. outro

There are many variations, and the repetitions of verses and choruses.

Thus the compositions of Gary Numan, of Tubeway Army with The Pleasure Principle can be regarded as goth, although the image was New Wave. The use of synthés analogical and its topics had an unquestionable influence on the posterior groups goths. Its style influenced the contemporary fashion of goth Cyberpunk.

The sound of the group which influenced the majority of the contemporary Goth music The Sisters off Mercy is appreciably different from its original of the Gothic music. Coming from these changes, a movement Goth Dance music was born.

The Goth modern music is generally scheduled, making a heavy use of FM and the synthés numerical ones. It is characterized by a sampling of clear case and large case. The device of car-arpeggiate of the modern synthetizers is employed in often complex arpeggiations simultaneous and multiple. The voices tend to be sinister and languid.

The Gothic clubs evolved/moved simultaneously with the industrial rock'n'roll, and both employ the same techniques and types of equipment of synthesis. The principal difference is that the industrial is “harder”, whereas the rock'n'roll goth is “softer”. The modern goth is an evolution of the music New wave or pop Synth, while the industrialist is an evolution of pop Synth and heavy metal. The guitar is not used much in the contemporary goth, but is often used intensively (with many Distorsion) in the industrial music.

In a less traditional style, the Gothic metal combines the medieval Gothic music with heavy the Doom metal. Goth metal is often described like the “Beautiful one and the animal” because of the characteristic duets between the macabre feminine voices envoûtantes and male-intonated voices. The principal groups of this sector are Paradise Lost, Theater off Tragedy, Tristania, Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation. In France, one can quote, for example, the group nîmois Maudite Asmodée and groups off it native of the Moselle region Arts Erebus like apparteneant with this mobility.
