- Towards 1440: Lorenzo Valla created the word to indicate a style of writing. The word thus qualified initially what was “Médiéval”; indeed, the expression Moyen-âge appeared only in 1604.
- 16th:
- Giorgio Vasari calls tedesco , “Tudesque”, medieval architectures.
- Andrea Palladio distinguishes the semicircular arch and the warhead, by not classifying them chronologically.
- 1610 : a French Jesuit translates Italian tedesco (according to the direction given by Vasari) into Latin by the word gothieus .
- 1619 : first use of the word in French.
- 18th and 18th: the word takes the pejorative direction of the word “Suranné”.
- 19th: Ogival and becomes synonymous and qualifies the architecture of 13th with the Renaissance.
