Gotein-Libarrenx

Gotein-Libarrenx is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Its name Basque is Gotaine Irabarne .

Geography

Located in the middle of the Basque Country at 4 kilometers of the capital of Drunk, Mauléon-Licharre. The Season approaches the village.

Hydrography

The grounds of the commune are sprinkled by affluents of the Gave d' Oloron, the Saison, and the brook the Lausset.
Affluents of the Season, Uhalteberri Erreka and the brook of Ordoby, also sprinkle the commune.

Toponymy

The toponym Gotein appears in the forms Gotenh (1375, contracts of Luntz), Goutain (XVIIe century, titles D' Arthez-Lassalle).
The toponym Libarrenx appears in the forms Livarren (XIVe century in the cartulaire of Bayonne), Libarren (1383, contracts of Luntz).

History

The Silviet or general meeting of the Third-State souletin, rather near to the Biltzar of Ustaritz, met (XVIIe century) in the forest of Libarrenx. The Silviet lost its representative role starting from 1730.
The village of Libarrenx was linked with the commune of Gotein on May 12th, 1841.

Religious heritage

Gotein has a church with the bell-tower trinitaire or souletin i.e. the peak of the wall, bored bays where the bells tinkle, are completed there by three large points about equal height, appearing the Trinity.

Environmental inheritance

Many fishermen live at the village and go each year to the various festivals and competition of fishings as in Mauléon with the Season (at the beginning of July) or in the Atlantic (Bayonne, etc). Children and adults like this festival and go there with pleasure!

In Gotein, one finds also village f4etes appreciated of all!

Sports events

The commune is located on the way of the 16th stage of the Tour de France 2007 which will take place on July 25th. The course of 218 kilometers will connect Orthez to Gourette - Collar of Aubisque.
