Gosau
Gosau is a commune of the district of Gmunden, in High-Austria.
Geography
Gosau is located on the river of which it bears the name, in the Salzkammergut. The altitude of the commune reaches 767 Mr. His width maximum is of 13,1 km of north in the south and of 17,4 km west in east. 58,9% of the territory are wooded.
History
The region, which made with the Moyen-âge part of the duchy of Bavaria, passed to the 12th century to the duchy of Austria and made since 1490 part of the Principauté of Austria-with-top-in-the Enns (“Österreich ob der Enns”, named today High-Austria). It was occupied on several occasions under the Empire, and belonged to Gau Oberdonau under the Third Reich. The population of the commune declines since 2001, passing from 1.949 inhabitants then with 1.904 in 2004.
Economy
If the inhabitants of Gosau worked a long time as workman and cattle breeders in the saltworks of Hallstatt, tourism is today the independent source of incomes of the city, as besides of the remainder of the area.
