Geography

It takes its source around the town of Châlus, in the south-west of the department of High-Vienna. It has an approximate way energy of the south-south-east towards the north-north-west. It passes by Gorre and Saint-Laurent-on-Gorre then enters a valley steepsided close to Saint-Hood and receives shortly after water of Gorret. It passes close to the town of Rochechouart little before being thrown in the Vienna with Saillat-on-Vienna, with the limit between the departments of the High-Vienna and the Charente

Affluents

  • Gorret: 12,2 km length. (left bank)

Hydrology

The annual medium flow of Gorre with Chaillac-on-Vienna, locality located not far from its confluence, is of 2,14 m ³ a second, and that for a surface of 186 km ², is almost the totality of its catchment area.

Like all the rivers of the west of the department, Gorre is more irregular than the rivers located more at the east (upstream of Limoges), the Combade for example. The river presents the seasonal fluctuations of flow typical of the Limousin, with winter risings from December to April included, and low waters of end of summer and beginning of autumn, from July to October.

In period of low water level, the VCN3 can fall until less than 0,09 m ³, that is to say less than 90 liters a second. Let us recall that the VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

The risings can be considerable for such a small river. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 22 and 33 m ³. They are the flows calculated for a biennial and quinquennial rising. The QIX 10, or calculated flow of decennial rising, is of 40 m ³ a second (see note). In other words, every two years, Gorre should have a rising of about 22 m ³, and statistically, every ten years, a rising of forty m ³ must occur.
