The name of the city appears for the first time in a document of the emperor Othon III, where she was written “Goritia”, which gave to the count de Frioul the city as well as the castle of Salcano.

The city will belong to the habsbourguiens fields until in 1918 with two short interruptions: the Venetian occupation of 1508 - 1509 and inclusion in the Napoleonean Provinces illyriennes. The king Charles X died in Gorizia in 1836 and is buried in the Slovenien part of Nova Gorica.

FRENCH TRANSLATION:

The morning of August five

The Italian troops were moving

For the remote grounds of Gorizia

And each one left in the pain.

Under the downpour of rain

The enemy balls fell like hail

On these mountains hills and large valleys

One would die by saying this:

" O Gorizia you are maudite"

For all the hearts which listen to their conscience,

The departure was painful,

and for much there was no return.

Oh cowards, you who remain

with the women in the wool beds (softs)

(you who you) make fun of our human flesh

This war learns how to us to punish.

You call “the field of honor”

This ground beyond the borders

Here one dies by shouting “Assassins,

One day, you will be cursed”

You my dear wife which do not hear me,

I ask my close relations companions

To take care on our children

Whereas I die with his name in the heart.

Sirs the traitors officers

This war wanted it to you

Ecarisseurs of our cannon fodders

And ruins youth

O Gorizia you are cursed

For all the hearts which listen to their conscience,

The departure was painful,

and for all there was no return.
