Goris

Goris (in Armenian: Գորիս ), is a city located at the south-east of the Arménie, in the current province of Syunik'. The city is located at the border of the Arménie and the Haut-Karabagh, and on the road leading to the Iran. It is built between a basin and a small mountain. The number of inhabitants would be of 14.000 hearts according to the authorities, but in truth they would be only 10.000.

The city has two museums:

  • the local museum
  • the museum Aksel Bakounts.

History and Downtown area

Goris is located not far from the monastery of Tatev, the road of salt passed by there. The city then formed part of the medieval province of the Zanguezour. the Goris old man is located on left bank of the goris (River). In the middle of the XIXe century settles on Right Bank of the dwellings which form the new city. Towards the end of this century, Goris was even the fourth Armenian city.

It really develops as from the years 1950, but does not change too the urban plan. The old man goris is famous because part of its houses are Troglodytes. In addition, this old district is spread out over a hill called “minis Cappadoce” thanks to its chimneys of fairies.

Twinning goes back to 1989.
