Gorgan
Gorgan (Persan: gorgān, RTL F گرگان, the wolves ) is a city of the North-East of the Iran, at the south-eastern end of the Caspian Sea. It is the capital of the province of the Golestan, located at 400 km of Teheran.
In the Antiquity, it was named Tambrax or Thambraces , and was capital ancient area called Hyrcanie (in Greek : ltr el Υρκανια, in Old man-Persan : Varkâna , meaning Ground of the wolves , the two names are probably related).
The city was capital with the X {{E}} and 11th centuries under the Ziyarides. One of most notable was Qabus, patron of Al-Biruni in the year 1000, which is buried in the close tower Gonbad-e Qabus.
In more recent times, the city was called Astrabad or Asterabad (the city of the Star ).
