Gordian Ier ( Marcus Antonius Gordianus Sempronianus Romanus Africanus ) (v. 157-238) was Roman Emperor in 238.
In 238, Marcus Antonius Gordianus, originating in Anatolia, was at the top of a senatorial long career, 80 years old, it is then proconsul of the Roman Province of Africa proconsulaire, when the owners of the city of Thysdrus, wearied taxes raised by Maximin Thrace indicate it as emperor. Immediately, because of its age, it associates his son Gordien II. The Roman Senate is not long in recognizing them.
However in Numidie, province close to Proconsulaire, the Legate remained faithful to Maximin, mobilizes the third legion Auguste, faces the army of Gordian, lifting to the haste and directed by his/her son Gordien II, which perishes with the combat. With the news of this death and this defeat, Gordien Ier committed suicide.
Maxime Pupien and Balbin took the title of emperor but it is the grandson of Gordian Ier, Gordien III which was named emperor in May 238.
