Google Current events

Google Current events or Google News is a free online service of Google which automatically presents articles of Information coming from source S on the Web. This service was created in April 2002, is always in beta release for the France and it is available in 22 country. The American part of the service left its statute beta the January 25th 2006.

Collection of information

In order to propose information which does not call (directly in any case) upon any Journaliste, Google Actualités selects information sources in the countries (or languages) where the service is proposed. Google Actualités counts for example 500 sources Francophone S and Google News 4500 sources Anglophone S. Each selected source is scanned several times per day by a Robot Google: a Googlebot, which indexes the new articles. The contents of the articles are then analyzed using Algorithmes to determine the subject.

Then the Article S are sorted per degree of relevance. For that Google takes into account at the same time Notoriété of the source and compares with other articles published on the same subject, in the same amount of time. According to that, the article will be more or less well classified on the page of Google Actualités and at the time of the requests made by the users.

Diffusion

On the principal page, the articles are gathered among the following headings: In , International , France , Undertaken , Science/Tech , Sports , Culture and Santé . A Mise up to date of the page is carried out every 15 minutes. It is possible to create a page personalized with its own headings: " Current events personnalisées".

Google Actualités is also a Search engine which has made it possible to make Requête S among the articles indexed by Google Actualités for the last 30 days.

By combining Google Topicality and the transport Gmail, Google created the Alertes Google. Service which makes it possible to receive emails by reports/ratios with a Mot-clé. As soon as the robots locate a word in article published in the language wished the article is sent to the desired Adresse email.

Disputes

In November 2004, Google revealed on its Blog, in connection with the Chinese version of Google News, which it had decided to exclude all the sources to which the Chinese authorities prohibited already the access. This measurement started protests, in particular on behalf of Reporters without borders.

In March 2005, the Agence France-Press decides to attack Google in justice about Google Actualités. The News agency showed Google to have violated the Copyright on its dispatches and its Photo S, by diffusing them without its authorization. AFP claims to him 17,5 million dollars of damage and interests. Before the term of this business, Google made the decision to withdraw from its site all the AFP contents and more to index it henceforth.

In 2007, the two companies bury the hatchet and sign this time a contract. The articles of AFP are again present in Google News with the help of a financial remuneration on behalf of Google.
