Gonzague house, line of Castiglione and Solférino

The line of Castiglione and Solférino is a branch “junior” by the Maison Gonzague .

The strongholds of Castiglione delle Stiviere and Solférino belonged to the possessions of the marquis Jean François de Mantoue which it distributed in heritage to his three sons. To its death in 1444, these strongholds were transmitted to the junior, Alexandre (with the strongholds of Castel Goffredo and Medole). Alexandre dies without descent, in 1466 and it is his/her older brother, Louis III of Mantoue, which will redistribute the grounds with its own sons; it is with Rodolphe, the junior, that the strongholds of Castiglione and Solférino will échéront (like those of Luzzara and Povoglio).
His/her older brother, Frederic (1440-1484), will continue the line of the marquis mantouans under the title of Frederic I {{er}} known as '' Uneven the '' (1478-1484).
Puîné, Jean-François (1443-1496), will be the founder of the line of Sabbioneta and Bozzolo.
One of his/her sisters, Dorothée will become duchess by marrying the duke of Milan, Galéas Marie Sforza. Another sister, Barbara, will marry the duke of Wurtemberg, Eberhard I {{er}}.

Rodolphe will have two wire, Jean-François and Louis Alexandre, which will respectively continue the lines of Luzzara and Castiglione and Solférino.

The last reigning sovereign will be Ferdinand III of Castiglione. The December 23rd 1691, a popular rising forced it to flee. The imperial authority sequestered its strongholds because of its bad management and, in spite of the Traité of Rastatt in 1714 which imposed the restitution of its grounds on its legitimate prince, did not return them. Gonzague lived in exile with Venice and Spain and remained applicants until in 1772, when Prince Luigi (1745-1819), great-grandson of Ferdinand III, renonça with its rights in favor of the Austria for an annual rent of 10  000 guilders.

The line of Castiglione and Solférino will die out with him in 1819.
