The castle of Gontaud de Nogaret

A document gone back to 1473, after the end of the War one hundred year old, called about Gontaud: “there was then neither castle, nor house for the lord”. Then one learns in the “Peerage-book from Guyenne and Gascogne” dated January 5th, 1495 that the rider Jean de Melet saw himself granting by the king Charles VII faculty to repurchase the “Manor house and Seigneurie of Gontaud” which had been sold for 2.500 books to Catherine d' Anglade and her son Jean de Verdum.

It is thus between 1473 and 1495 that this building was built. During the wars of religion, on July 13rd, 1580, the marshal Armand de Gontaud, baron de Biron, with the head of the Catholic army , attacks Gontaud which is with the hands of the Protestants. The Château will be the only house saved by this plundering and the Incendie of the village. Indeed, it belongs then to a noble catholic: Jean de Montferrand, baron de Cancon, heir to Verdun. The following day the castle will be occupied by the catholic soldiers.

During the disorders of the Sling, on December 4th 1652, Gontaud again will be besieged and plundered by two regiments of cavalry and infantry of the marquis de Biron. There still, the castle of the lord of Montferrand will be saved by the army of Cop but to pay to this grace the accountant of the community will have to give to besieging the 20 Boisseau X of Avoine and nine of Orge.

After Montferrand, it is the family Luppe d' Arblade which will have the castle in 1661 then Timothée de Bacalan in 1694 which will make there carry out the first known repairs. Then it will be lord Jean Pellet.

October 2nd 1793, the goods of the Pellet family will be seized and the castle of Gontaud will be allocated to the public biddings with the citizen Marguerite Degalz, widowed Martineau. The castle will until May 6th, 1914 remain the property of the Martineau family, date on which it will be sold to Mr Armand de Gontaud-Biron, marquis de Gontaud and of Saint-Blancard.

But the castle then misses cruelly maintenance and the January 5th 1949 the small tower on the northern side collapses on the street, involving with it half of the main building.

From 1955 of many owners followed one another without engaging of great work. A work of restoration of the existing parts was undertaken since 1997 by new owners. Since mid- 2007, half of the main building, collapsed in 1949, was rebuilt by local companies.
