Gong (group)

Gong is a group of Space rock'n'roll, progressive Rock and Free-jazz founded by Australian the Daevid Allen , guitarist of Soft Machine following an exile forced in France starting from 1967.

At the same time delirious, merry and energetic, the music of Gong combines naive melodies, sometimes simple and powerful, sometimes sophisticated rates/rhythms and planing environments… The most recognized work group is the trilogy comprising Flying Teapot , Angel' S Egg and You .

At its first hours, the group is at the same time a musical unit and a community hippie in which each member is affublé of a pseudonym.

Daevid Allen will leave to New York in 1974 leaving the group to the beater Pierre Moerlen which will direct the group towards the Jazz Rock'n'roll. It is difficult to locate the group as from this period insofar as Daevid Allen founds New York Gong in which Bill Laswell takes part, then Planet Gong on its side. He collaborates occasionally with the Japanese group psychedelic Acid Mothers Temple which becomes then Acid Mothers Gong .

The success of the beginnings nevertheless will be found neither by one nor by the other.

A return to a formation close to the beginnings was operated in 1991.
