Gondrecourt-the-Castle

Gondrecourt-the-Castle is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine.

Geography

Gondrecourt is located in a very narrow valley sprinkled by the Ornain, and limited to north by naked rocks which, in some places, have more than 30 meters of rise. It is divided into high and low city. The first, built on a plate, named formerly Gondrecourt-the-Castle, because of an old man strong Château whose time almost buried the memory (there remains a round tower which currently shelters a museum of the horse). It existed at the 7th century and was says one built by certain Gondoin, which would have come to him the name that it carries still today. According to the old chronicles, this Gondouin, lord of Meuse, were father of Bodon Leudin, bishop of Toul, and Sainte Salaberge. The low city is made partly of modern constructions and is crossed by Ornain, whose two banks are furnished with quays in almost all the extent of the city.

History

After having had originally its particular lords and to be then joined together with Champagne, the ground of Gondrecourt was given in 1307, with its dependences with Edouard Ier, count of Bar, by Philippe Beautiful the. Since this time, Gondrecourt, like all the feudal fields of some importance, was often asserted by the kings of France and the feudatories. In turn, this city undergoes the yoke of the lords that one or the others granted to him, without daring to complain about successive changes which did not modify of anything its misery nor its wellbeing.

Thus one sees at various times the seigniory of Gondrecourt had by Rinel, the counts of Bar, the dukes of Lorraine, Of Armoises, the dukes of Burgundy, the lords d' Anglure, the marshal of Hospital, etc the dukes of Bar, who were longest the owners, granted to him, inter alia privileges, that to receive from their authority justice on the spot. Also there was a sedentary bailliage with Gondrecourt until 1711, time to which it was joined together with that of Lamarche. The destiny of Gondrecourt was sad during all the feudal mode and its records are hardly composed but of calamities. In 1368, the Residents of Metz came to besiege it and seized some. Colart of Armoises and the count of Saint pol., which had valiantly defended it, or were decapitated or hung, with thirteen other gentlemen of most outstanding.

XIVe and XVe centuries, in these unhappy times when so many enemy or allied brigands traversed Lorraine as devastators, Gondrecourt, poorly defended by its wall enclosure, could not resist the wild cupidity of these adventurers. Also it was often taken, taken again, ransacked and set fire to, until finally Louis XIII entirely made some dismantle the fortifications (1633-1634).
