Gondebaud
Gondebaud ( Gundobald ), born before 455, is King of Burgondes (territory of the the Alps to the the Loire and of the the Rhine higher than the Provence) of 480 to its death in 516.
The father of Gondebaud, the king Gondioc, and his/her uncle, Chilpéric, are kings before him. Gondioc is also Maître of the Militia for the Roman Empire.
It is initially for this reason that Gondebaud succeeds to him: named “Main of the Militia of the Gaulle” by another of his/her uncles, the suève of high birth Ricimer (472), then is named Patrice by the Empereur Olybrius; after the death of this emperor, it raises with the imperial Trône Glycerius, which quickly proves to be only a one emperor marionette like his predecessors. Gondebaud nevertheless is returned in Savoy ( Sapaudia ) in 474 by the following emperor, Julius Nepos, territory where are established its people since 443.
With died of the king Chilpéric in 480, Gondebaud becomes finally king of Burgondes at the sides of his/her three brothers, according to the Germanic habit of division of the kingdom. Two of his/her brothers, Chilpéric II and Godomar II are rather quickly isolated capacity, doubtless assassinated on order of Gondebaud or by Gondebaud itself.
Bench with Lyon, Gondebaud then shares its prerogatives with its third brother, Godégisèle, itself established with Geneva. During this period, Gondebaud drives back the Alamans with the borders of the Suisse while also resisting the attempts at Conversion of the bishop Avit, preferring to remain arien like the majority of its people, divided between the Hérésie of Arius and the Paganisme.
In 500, the kingdom of Burgondes is attacked by the Francs of Clovis, become probably Christian recently, this last being since the beginning of the Années 490 the husband of its Christian niece, Clotilde, converted like a fraction of its people to the Roman Religion . The Francs are also the allies of the Co-king Godégisèle, that Gondebaud, taken refuge in the Forteresse of Avignon, manages to kill before linking Burgondes under its authority.
In 507, Gondebaud is combined in its turn with Clovis against the Visigoths of the king Alaric then tests, always associated with Clovis, to take the city of Arles (507 - 508). Burgondes and Francs are then beaten by the Ostrogoths come to release the city.
The name of Gondebaud, which has sû to reconcile at the same time the support of the Gallo-Romans of his kingdom and of the whole of Burgondes, also remained in Droit through major work of its reign: the Law known as Gombette , promulgated the March 29th 502.
This law, initially made up of eighty eight titles, concerns above all the Roman territorial right: it is not only one Germanic personal law. Lastly, it stresses the equality between Gallo-Romans and Burgondes, contrary to the Goths and the Vandales for example. This law allows a rather harmonious fusion between indigenous S and occupying “Barbares”.
Gondebaud dies in 516, probably in Geneva.
