Gonçalo Velho Cabral
Gonçalo Velho Cabral is a Portuguese explorer originating in the town of Viana de Castelo. It was elected by the prince Henri the Navigator (in Portuguese the Infante Dom Henrique ) to recognize and chart the archipelago of the the Azores.
One could not say to the Juste if it were the first to approach the Azores in 1427 or if that were done by another explorer, for example Diego De Silves. In any case, it took an active share with the systematic exploration of the archipelago starting from 1432. This systematic exploration was completed only in 1452, by other explorers.
Meanwhile, colonization had begun (1439).
On arrival of the first Portuguese, the archipelago being deserted, colonization progressed quickly, and Gonçalo Velho was named captain-donee of the archipelago.
Today still, the town square of the capital of the Azores bears its name. It is to say that he played a central role in the Portuguese establishment in the Azores.
