Gonâve

The island of Gonâve , in the past called island of Gonaïve is an island of the Caraïbe and a Arrondissement of Haiti. It is located of the Golfe of Gonâve .

History

The island of Gonâve was the last refuge of the Amerindian Taïno S in Haiti. Thus it is following the massacre of the queen Anacaona by the Conquistador S that the survivors of its court took refuge on the island and baptized it Gonabo .

During second half of the 19th century, the island started to attract fishermen. Little time after began agriculture in the island.

At the time of the American occupation the island was divided into companies working and together living Congo. It is an officer étasunien, Faustin Wirkus which was selected as king of the island by the population in the years 1920. He told his history in a very disputed work: “the white king of Gonâve”.

In 1976, a Cyclone devastation the south of Haiti and many survivors come to settle as farmers in Gonâve.

Geography

Gonâve is an island mountainous and arid, little populated, its culminating point is at 300 m of altitude. It makes a surface of 743 km ² and extends over a 60 km and 15 km length from width. It is located between the channel of Saint-Marc and the channel of the South.

Zetwa is a very small port in the North-West of the island.

Administratively

Gonâve is a Arrondissement department of the West in Haiti. It is made up of two communes: Handle-with-Rollers and Point-with-Racket.
