Goldfrapp
Goldfrapp is a group of Electronic music, related with the électropop.
Goldfrapp, or fruit of a collaboration between Will Gregory and Alison Goldfrapp which was initially pointed out as singer on the first albums of Tricky and Orbital.
The duet takes as a starting point the compositions of Gustave Malher, Nino Rota, Francoise Hardy, Kurt Weill and Ennio Morricone.
Biography
Although the singer and driving of the group reveals only very little her private life, it is nevertheless possible to establish a biographical course.
Born in a small village plunged in the English countryside towards the beginning of the year 1970, Allison Goldfrapp very develops a character melancholic person and contemplative as of his more young age. At the school however, although it shows a certain intelligence, it is pointed out by its side provocative and shocking in particular while taking drugs with solvents. If the teenager shows herself also sulfurous, it is because she suffers not only from the evil of the decade (“I always found that years 1980 were null and old-fashioned as well politically as artistically… even at the time”) but in more feels with narrow in her so puritan and preserving countryside. It thus decides at 18 years to leave towards the big cities.
After several hazardous artistic meetings, it sets a certain time in Belgium with a group of artists which, acknowledges she, made more of the noise than another thing. It starts studies of visual arts, appearing very gifted and inspired in the matters of its choice. It ends up meeting Tricky which will tighten the first to him a microphone. From this association are born some titles of which Pumpk practically recorded without wire since the text was not fixed in advance. After having turned with Tricky, it decides to only launch out but, for lack of partner, does not find any opportunity to record. It is there that a supposed common friend to sing on a song written and composed by Will Gregory introduces the two members of the future group. After having lengthily spoken about the music that they liked, their professional ambitions and more generally of their vision of the music, they realize of their complementarity: one needs a type-setter, the other of a singer. It is there that Goldfrapp is born.
In 1999 they sign a contract with the label Mute Records to record a first album. Spending the months in a bungalow in full nature, the duet records the album Felt Mountain whose first title is Lovely Head . Allison Goldfrapp declares at the time: “First of all that did not resemble large-thing but once one listened to the refrain " was said; Wouah! One nothing heard forever tel" ”. Completely inspired, they are tested with techniques varied (for example, the vocal part of Deer Stop was recorded in full nature the evening, under stars) while keeping a spirit very trip-hop and pop strong near to Ennio Morricone and group Portishead. The album leaves in 2000 and is a success mitigated near the masses (not to say quasi no one) but will be truly adulated by the criticism and the medium of the electronic music. The group will however recognize a few years later their obvious lack of technique on their first album.
A round follows during which they continue to compose in particular the titles the U.K. Girls , Fondue Knights , Little Death and Sartorius . If these four new titles appear, it is because the group feels frustrated to have only nine songs to defend on scene and thus decides to vary a little.
In 2002, extremely several months on scene, the duet turns over in studio, again in a small bungalow in the town of Bath. There, they categorically refuse to take the same direction that their preceding album and are directed towards very an other way: pop electro acidulous. It is in spring 2003 that their second opus leaves entitled Black Cherry , plus rate/rhythm (“We want to really do something of more energetic, this is why we took again a sample title Physical of Olivia Newton-John at the time of the preceding round”) which literally upsets the fans of the first hour. Goldfrapp uses an imagery of hybrid beings, semi-men, semi-animals which will never leave them really. Disappointing for some, brilliant for others, their public is terribly divided but Goldfrapp is card-indexed some because it is the public which must be put up with the desires to the artist and not the reverse. Their first individual, Train, is a better success than all those drawn from their first album and, following the example the two individual ones which will follow it, Strict Machine and Twist, it profits from a video shocking and provocative. Because in fact, Train speaks about the vice and the decline of the evenings of cities such as Los Angeles, where a true frenzy of perversion is felt (frantic cf bearing of the train). In 2004, Goldfrapp turns over on the boards with a round which will know rooms larger than before. Indeed, during this time they sold more than one million albums and meet a growing success, in particular near the gay culture. While remaining simple, the round is punctuated of some extravagances whose only Allison has the secrecy (tail of horse fixed on small shorts, held provocantes, etc).
In 2005, their return to the studio gives rise to their third work, Supernature . After having held the fans in long breath, they leave the opus in August. Success is hardly made wait: their first individual Ooh the is placed directly in the fourth place of the British classifications and their second individual, Number One , sixth.
In 2007, the group makes an appearance in an episode of the famous American series The L Word in which he plays Ride has White Horse on line bar Planet where the group of friends lesbians is found.
The history of Goldfrapp is always moving and seems well left to last still a long time.
