In the Bible, the Golden calf (in Hebrew: עגלהזהב) is a symbol of the Idolâtrie.

History according to the Bible

During the rise of the Mount the Sinai by Brace, to receive the Tables of the Law, the Hebrew , lately released from the yoke of the Pharaon, pressed Aaron to build a to them Idole of gold, by melting the bracelets and collars which they had succeeded in taking with them. It built a golden calf which they adored with the imitation of the Bœuf which was adored in Egypt.

When Moïse went down from the Sinai mount, and that he saw the Hebrews adoring an idol (thing literally prohibited by the Third Command), he was took of an anger so large which he crashed to pieces the Tables of the Law on a rock. For this fault, Moïse will be condemned to turn over to the top of the Sinai mount to engrave the Tables one second time, and especially to pass its life to be wandered in the desert without never seeing the Promised land: he will die after the forty years that the people of Israel passed in the desert, with the slope of a dune which hid this Ground where milk and honey run.

However, Moïse forgave its fault with Aaron, and it was even high by his brother with the row of high priest, load which it was the first to be exerted.
