the Middle Ages
Created in 1360, in the first years of the One hundred year old War, by Bonabes IV of Red and Derval and of the close relations of king de France to obtain the release of the king Jean the Good, prisoner of the English.Overcome in Poitiers in 1356, the king of France, Jean the Good is made prisoner by the English. To pour his ransom (3 million books tournaments), his/her son makes strike in 1360 a new part made of fine gold of 3,885 grams being worth 20 grounds where the king is not represented any more on a throne but with horse holding up in his left hand a sword. This new currency, created with initaitive of Bonabes IV of the House of Red in Brittany, makes it possible to the king to return frank in his kingdom, i.e. free and freed. From now on, the name remains attached at piece-rates. The gold franc will survive only 25 years, since in 1385, Charles VI replaces it by the ecu of gold to the crown.
Contemporary period
The gold franc was a Unit of Account used by the Banque of the international payments, of 1930 to 2003. It was replaced by the special drawing rights.The gold franc was derived from the Swiss franc, and its foreign exchange rate remained fixed at 0,29 G of fine Or when the Swiss franc put an end to the Gold Standard.
