Gold dictionaries

The Dicos of gold were a championship of orthography initiated by Bernard Pivot in 1985 under the name of Championnat of France of orthography then Championnat of the world of orthography .

The texts of the dictations were worked out by the linguist Micheline Summoning (for the semi-finals) and by Bernard Pivot (for the final).

Unfolding

These championships proceeded in three phases:

  • the phase of selection: multiple-choice questionnaires and texts to be corrected were published in the literary magazine Lire .
  • regional semi-finals: the candidates having made a success of the phase of selection were convened on a regional level for the semi-finals in a place each time different. The tests included/understood multiple-choice questionnaires, the dictation itself then mini-dictations making it possible to decide between the ex æquo.
  • the national final: the candidates having obtained the best result in each category of each area found themselves at the winter in a single place for the final whose principle was the same one as the semi-finals.

There were four categories:

  • juniors of the school die;
  • juniors;
  • the seniors amateurs;
  • professional seniors.

A couples category also existed in the old formula of the championships.

Evolution

Initially national, the test opens very early with an international public. This evolution culminates with the Printemps 1992 with a dictation given to the seat of the the United Nations, with New York. Some two hundred and fifty candidates come from the whole world dispute the championship of the world there, in categories classifying in a differentiated way the French, the French-speaking nationals of country and those of nonFrench-speaking countries. Titrate text: Of the flowers for the champions .

Since, the organizers of the dictation returned to the test its national dimensions, and renamed it “gold Dictionaries”. The dictations are then supplemented by tests of multiple-choice questionnaires on subjects of comprehension of the language. With the international level, the Dictée of Americas took over in 1994.

The gold Dictionaries die out the November 26th 2005, by a finale bringing together the former champions.
