Scarab3ee of gold ( The Gold Bug ) is a Nouvelle of Edgar Allan Poe, published in June 1843 in the newspaper of Philadelphia Dollar Newspaper .

Poe gained a contest organized by the newspaper and receipt a price of 100 dollars, which represents the highest amount that the writer touched for a news published. It is also the text most largely read the alive one of the author.

The news popularized the Cryptographie near the general public while establishing the reputation of cryptographe except par of the writer to the eyes of his contemporaries. It was included in many newspapers and publications and was translated into French by Charles Baudelaire and was published in the collection of the extraordinary Histoires .

Edgar Allan Poe resided at Fort Moultrie of 1827 with 1828 on the Sullivan island in the county of Charleston (South Carolina) where is held the intrigue. Several streets carry today the name of its news and poems (Raven drive, GoldBug Drive…) and the library was named in its honor. The romantic screen on which the news is based also continues to justify the hunters on the traces of a treasure hidden in the area.
