Gokishichidō

Gokishichidō (五畿七道) (reads. " five provinces and seven circuits") is the name of an old administrative organization of the Japan installation during the Period Asuka (538 - 710). This organization will perdura until the Period Muromachi (1336 - 1573). Gokishichidō consisted of a division in 5 provinces ( Kinai 畿内) having a capital and in the creation of 7 axes of communications ( 道).

The seven connected the imperial capital to the remainder of the territory. These roads were marked out stages.

  • Tōkaidō (left in direction the east while following the coast the Pacific Ocean)

  • Tōsandō (towards the North-East through the the Japanese Alps left)
  • Hokurikudō (left towards the North-East while following the coast the Mer Japan
  • Sanindō (left towards the west while following the coast the Mer Japan)
  • Sanyōdō (towards the west)
  • Nankaidō (towards the peninsula Kii and the islands Awaji and Shikoku)
  • Saikaidō (towards Kyūshū)

The roads of Gokishichidō should not be confused with the roads of the Gokaidō (五街道) which were created at the time of the Period Edo. Only the circuit of Tōkaidō belongs at the same time to Gokishichidō and Gokaidō.
